is there any TRULY free antivirus and adware removal programs?

I’ve looked around and everytime i want to download one, it tells me that it costs money, and if i don’t want to buy it, i could get it for free (but then i have to spend money on one of their offers to get it for free, and those are more expensive than the product themselves). So it’s NOT free! Is there any TRULY 100% free programs out there?

I use these free programs on my computer running XP..

    Avast Home edition
    Comodo BOClean
    Spybot Search and Destroy
    Superantispyware
    Comodo Firewall Pro

Those are all free to use…. but truly free.. Clam AV is open source… but not good for average users.

The best way to not get viruses is too not use windows… switch to Mac, Linux (free, fast, stable, etc.), freebsd, etc.

I love either ad-aware by http://www.lavasoft.com (download) or http://www.bitdefender.com (free online scan tool, now with spyware killer)

Yes, of course there are good free programs.
Anti-virus – AVG and Avast are just two of many

Anti-Spyware – Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster are just two among many.

Well, first of all, if you have Verizon DSL or Comcast you can get free anti-virus from them. Comcast I know offers a great mcaffee suite for free, you just have to sign up for it. If you don’t have free anti-virus through your ISP you can get Anti-Virus Guard for free here http://free.avg.com/ and as for free Adware scanners you can get either Adaware here http://www.lavasoftusa.com or Spybot Search and Destroy here http://www.safer-networking.org/

    avast! 4 Home Edition

I have been using this since I’ve stopped paying for my Norton subscription. Its completely free, no shareware or ads, and updates constantly.

Adaware and Avira are pretty good. Of course they come with “full” versions that cost money but they’re free versions aren’t trials and are tough cookies for fighting viruses with. Spybot also comes with a few utilities that adaware and avira lack.

    So in short.

    Adaware
    Avira
    Spybot.

When in doubt, system restore and delete malicious files.

    AVG, and Avast. :D

In my 50 years of existence coming from a time long before there was even the dream of a PC, I’ve at one time or another tried about every product out there.
I am REALLY impressed with a program named “Avast!”. You can use it for FREE for home use. Called Avast! 4.8 Home Edition. Straight up, one of the better programs (free or paid) available. For the last two (2) years, AV Comparisons have rated it higher than Norton, McAfee and Kasperski in detection rates based on available virus definitions. Avast! also provides “real-time” protection (always running in the background).
As for anti-spyware’s, Spybot S&D does offer “real-time” protection, but independent testing has confirmed that in the last several years, it’s detection rate has really fallen, and now is only considered only an “average” program at most. I am not aware of any decent real-time programs out there but I would highly recommend a program named “SUPERantispyware. It is completely free and offers some of the best spyware protection available. Just remember to do a manual scan every day or so.

Following is the correct links for both products:

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

    http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html

    Good Luck !!!

EDIT: Forgot to tell you that “SpywareBlaster” can be a very effective program if you are using MS Internet Explorer (IE 7 or 8) but is really not that effective for other browsers, (i.e. Firefox)….. actually NOT recommended for any other browser except IE7 0r 8 !!!
